Dr. Hani Ashamalla is a Clinical Professor of Radiation Oncology at Weill Cornell Medicine and Chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology at New York Presbyterian-Brooklyn Methodist Hospital (BMH) where he serves as the residency program director & chair of cancer activities committee. In addition to these academic duties, Dr. Ashamalla has also been actively engaged in global health. For the past 20 years, Dr. Ashamalla has volunteered as part of a medical mission to Namibia. He has worked with the Windhoek Central Hospital to care for cancer patients. He also regularly volunteers in Ethiopia.

Following a Pulmonology residency, Dr. Ashamalla went on to complete a radiation oncology residency at BMH and a pediatric oncology fellowship at The University of Pennsylvania. He has spent over 20 years as a radiation oncologist at BMH, where he has been the chairman since 2010.  He specializes in the treatment of a Lung and Prostate cancers using advanced radiotherapy techniques which he has incorporated into oncology care at BMH. 

As a well recognized leader of oncology in Brooklyn, Dr. Ashamalla has been instrumental in the introduction of the most advanced treatment techniques, including stereotactic radiosurgery, intensity modulated radiation therapy, stereotactic body radiotherapy, brachytherapy and radiopharmaceuticals.

Dr. Ashamalla has been a pioneer in the field implementing PET scans into radiotherapy treatment, investigating  the novel use of acupuncture in men with hot flashes and in the development of radioactive neurosurgical techniques in treatment of spinal metastases.

Dr. Ashamalla is active in clinical and translational research as the principal investigator of a main NRG site and in addition to serving on the GU, CNS and GYN NRG-subcommittees in addition to the ASTRO measures sub-committee. He has published over 100 articles in scientific journals, authored several textbook chapters and presented his research at numerous national and international meetings.
